Boiler Stopped Working?

If your boiler stops working and leaves your property without heating or hot water, it can quickly become stressful – especially in cold weather.

Always Here in Your Hour of Need

At Complete Heating, we provide emergency boiler repair for homeowners, landlords and selected small commercial properties across Worcestershire and the surrounding Midlands areas.

A boiler emergency doesn’t always signify a total breakdown. The issue could involve major malfunctions, safety concerns, a boiler losing water, persistent error indicators, or an emergency fault that renders the appliance unsafe or unreliable. If you need emergency boiler repairs, same day visits are available, or just want some impartial advice on your next steps, we will take a level headed approach.

Complete Heating is Gas Safe registered – No. 215453.

Call 0800 050 2345 or email john@complete-heating.co.uk to discuss your boiler installation.

What Counts as an Emergency Boiler Repair?

Not every boiler fault is a boiler emergency, but some situations do need urgent attention. In general, emergency boiler repair applies when your boiler stops working, and the property is left without heating or hot water, or where there is a safety concern linked to the gas boiler or wider system.

A boiler emergency may include:

  • A broken boiler with no heating or hot water
  • A complete boiler breakdown in cold weather
  • A gas leak or a strong smell gas issue
  • A carbon monoxide alarm is sounding
  • A significant water leak from the boiler or connected pipes
  • The boiler pressure is rising too high or dropping repeatedly.
  • Serious fault warnings or persistent error codes
  • A boiler working unsafely or switching off repeatedly
  • Problems affecting vulnerable people in the property, such as older occupants, young children or those with health conditions

If your boiler stops working completely, particularly during colder periods, it is reasonable to treat that as an emergency boiler repair situation.

Boiler Repairs

The most common faults with Gas Boilers, Combi Boiler Systems and System Boilers include:

  • No Heat/Hot Water
  • Low Water Pressure
  • Leaks From The Boiler
  • Unusual Sounds
  • Inconsistent Temperature
  • Boiler Repeatedly Losing Pressure

If you see these signs in your boiler, you should get it checked as soon as possible.

Boiler Servicing

Annual Boiler service shelters you from serious risks with your boiler and helps maintain efficiency by keeping it safe to use, and also ensures your warranty remains valid.

Most major Boiler manufacturers advocate an annual Boiler service. It's also important to get your boiler serviced regularly because it:

  • Improves boiler efficiency
  • Ensures safe gas operation
  • Helps prevent carbon monoxide risk
  • Identifies wear before breakdown
  • Ensures the boiler is properly maintained

Regular servicing also helps ensure the boiler remains boiler safe and operating correctly while keeping the boiler warranty valid.

What To Do If You Smell Gas

If you smell gas or think you may have a gas leak, treat it as an emergency – not a routine repair. Switch off the boiler if it’s safe to do so. Open any windows. Do not light matches. Do not touch any electrical switches. Leave the property if you need to. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Similarly, if you think there may be carbon monoxide, or you have a detector sounding its alarm, leave the property and head outdoors. Call for emergency assistance immediately.

Gas safety is the priority. Only when you know the immediate gas danger has passed should you concern yourself with the boiler repairs.

What To Check Before Calling For Emergency Boiler Repair

If your boiler stops working, it is worth carrying out a few simple checks before arranging an emergency repair. Sometimes the issue is smaller than it first appears.

Check the following:

  • Is the thermostat set correctly?
  • Is there power to the boiler?
  • Is the boiler pressure between 1 and 1.5 bar?
  • Are there any error codes showing on the display?
  • Has the pilot light gone out?
  • Has there been a power cut or reset issue?
  • Is the gas supply working properly?
  • In cold weather, could the condensate pipe have frozen?

If the condensate pipe freezes, you may be able to thaw it gently with hot water bottles or heat packs. If the boiler includes a reset facility, the manufacturer’s manual should tell you how to reset it properly. These solutions may get things going again, but if the fault persists, you should get an engineer to check it properly.

Our Emergency Boiler Repair Approach

In emergency boiler situations, the goal is to ensure the home is safe, pinpoint the issue, and then restart the heating or hot water if the repair is feasible.

Our process normally includes:

  • Initial explanation of fault/symptoms
  • Safety checks to ensure the property is safe
  • Visual inspection of boiler & associated system
  • Review of error codes/pressure/controls & general visible condition
  • Diagnostic check by our qualified heating engineer
  • Recommendation of the most practical repair option
  • Carrying out any initial repair that can be dealt with
  • Recommendation to call back for further repairs/replacement parts or replacement if necessary

Some emergency boiler repairs can be able to completed in one visit if the problem is fairly simple and our engineer has the necessary replacement parts in their van. Some simple repairs can take around 1-2 hours. More complex issues may take a bit longer or may take a second visit.

Types of Emergency Boiler Problems

Emergency boiler repair can involve many different problems. Some will be simple to diagnose and repair. Others may require further investigation and parts ordered before the full repair can be made.

Some common problems that require emergency boiler repair are:

  • It appears the boiler has malfunctioned, and there's no heat being produced.
  • Taps are producing no hot water
  • Boiler pressure problems
  • Leaks from the boiler itself, valves or nearby pipes
  • Faulty controls
  • Ignition failure and pilot light problems
  • Pump failure or circulation problems
  • Error codes relating to safety faults or performance issues
  • Radiators refusing to heat up even though your boiler is on
  • Issues with a separate hot water cylinder or a system cylinder on some systems

As a combi boiler heats water directly from the mains flow, it doesn’t require a separate hot water cylinder. For this reason, combi boilers are common in properties up and down the UK. Some homes will have what’s known as a cylinder system. Emergency repairs can include further investigations throughout the heating system as well as the boiler itself.

Same Day Emergency Boiler Repair

If we can manage it, we’ll get an emergency boiler repair done the same day, especially when there’s no heating or hot water and the issue’s creating a major inconvenience. Availability will depend on your location, the time of day, our workload and the nature of the emergency boiler problem.

We understand that a same-day response is essential where:

  • The boiler has broken down in winter
  • Vulnerable people are living at the property
  • The home has lost all hot water
  • The heating system has failed completely
  • The boiler emergency is putting the normal use of the home at risk

If we can’t fix it the first time, then we will still make it our priority to diagnose the fault, make everything safe and advise you on the next steps.

Repair or Replace in an Emergency?

When a boiler breaks, some companies push too quickly towards a new boiler. That is not always the right answer. In many cases, emergency boiler repairs are the sensible first route, especially if the fault is isolated and the appliance is otherwise in reasonable condition.

Replacement may be worth discussing if:

  • The boiler is older and increasingly unreliable
  • The same fault keeps coming back
  • Important replacement parts are no longer available
  • The cost of repeated repairs is becoming hard to justify
  • The boiler has a poor warranty position
  • The system is causing ongoing problems beyond a single fault

Where possible, we aim to fix the issue first and advise honestly if replacement looks more sensible in the long run.

A good place to start is our two free tools:

  • Does my boiler need to be repaired?
  • Does my boiler need replacing?

Boiler Pressure and Safety Concerns

One concern people often have is that high boiler pressure will cause the boiler to explode. Domestic boilers are fitted with safety features, so this isn’t something that will happen on a standard system if the pressure is too high. But that doesn’t mean that a pressure fault should be ignored.

Having too high or too low pressure or continually jumping pressure could mean that the engineer will need to check the system, expansion vessels, valves and any associated pipework. Pressure faults can affect the operation of the boiler and could be an indication of a bigger problem with the system.

Safety is paramount, particularly where there are multiple issues with gas, water and pressure faults.

Boiler Service, Warranty and Preventing Future Repairs

Regular servicing reduces the chance of emergency faults developing unnoticed. An annual boiler service helps identify wear early, check safety, and keep the boiler running more reliably.

Boiler service and boiler repairs are different, but they are closely linked. An annual boiler service may help:

  • Keep the boiler working safely
  • Support warranty terms
  • Keep the warranty valid where required
  • Reduce the risk of unexpected breakdown
  • Identify issues before they become major repairs
  • Help the system run more efficiently

A missed boiler service does not guarantee a breakdown. Still, regular service attention can reduce the risk of future repairs and help keep the home warm through the winter.

Emergency Boiler Repair FAQs

Typically, when people refer to emergency boiler repair, they mean either a breakdown where the boiler has stopped working, leaving the home without heating or hot water or a situation where there is a significant safety issue, such as a gas leak, a smell of gas situation, a carbon monoxide alarm going off, a major leak or worrying fault messages.

If your boiler breaks down, you should always first ensure it isn't something basic like the pressure, thermostat temperature or a boiler error code that can be solved relatively easily. If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If your boiler needs urgent repair, get in contact with us on: 0800 050 2345.

If your boiler breaks down, leaving you without heating or hot water, you may want to get it repaired urgently. If you're in winter and without heating, or someone elderly or with young children or babies living in the home, it is advisable to class it as an emergency boiler repair. Any issues that present a potential gas safety risk should always be dealt with urgently.

No, if your boiler pressure is too high, it will not cause your boiler to explode. All boilers are built with features that will prevent high-pressure issues. However, a boiler that has a pressure fault will still need repairing, as it can indicate that there is a fault with the boiler or its components.
